A short meeting in French: understand, respond and pass on a time
Leo and Ana meet where they study, then arrange to go to a café. You will follow Leo's introduction, respond as Ana, ask for repetition and tell Mia the arrangement. The central idea is to join short, familiar phrases and keep the information unchanged, with no new grammar or compulsory test. Allow about ten minutes, or eighteen with listening and repetition.
Keep three useful words nearby
Demain means tomorrow, café here is the place, and trois is three. À trois heures means at three o'clock; heures is the plural of heure. Au café means to the café with on va, or at the café in the short message below; au joins à + le.
Recover these familiar building blocks: je m'appelle… (my name is…), j'ai… ans (I am… years old), je suis de… (I am from…), je parle français (I speak French) and j'étudie ici (I study here). You can consult this support throughout. You do not have to remember a whole introduction at once.
One word at the entrance
Someone welcomes Leo with Bienvenue !, meaning Welcome! This is an incidental greeting: recognizing its meaning is enough, and you do not have to produce it. It adds no task to the conversation.
Bienvenue !
Listen or read: who is Leo?
All six lines are Leo speaking; follow the audio or read at your own pace. Listen for his name, age and place of origin, then the language he speaks and what he does here. Bonjour means hello; vingt is twenty, ans is years, français is French and ici is here.
Check the information: his name is Leo; he is twenty, from Paris, speaks French and studies here. Je suis de Paris gives his origin, not necessarily where he lives now. French uses j'ai for age, literally I have, where English uses I am.
Bonjour !
Je m'appelle Leo.
J'ai vingt ans.
Je suis de Paris.
Je parle français.
J'étudie ici.
Respond with your own information
A is Leo and B is Ana. Ana answers with her own name, then adds that she studies here and speaks French too. The phrases stay the same; the information belongs to the person speaking. Je m'appelle is a familiar name formula: just replace the name. In this example, Ana does not claim Leo's age or origin.
- A
Je m'appelle Leo.
- B
Je m'appelle Ana.
- B
J'étudie ici.
- B
Je parle français.
Agree, then ask to hear the time again
With the same speakers, On va au café demain ? proposes going to the café tomorrow. Here on includes the speaker and the other person; keep the familiar on va without learning a new pronoun chart. D'accord means all right, and Leo supplies the time: À trois heures.
Ana asks Tu peux répéter ? (Can you repeat that?), and Leo repeats exactly the same time, allowing her to recover the missed detail. Tu addresses one person informally here. The source gives tomorrow and three o'clock; it does not specify a calendar date or morning versus afternoon.
- A
On va au café demain ?
- B
D'accord.
- A
À trois heures.
- Binformal
Tu peux répéter ?
- A
À trois heures.
- B
D'accord.
Tell Mia the same day, place and time
Ana now sends Mia the arrangement. Compare the message with Leo's words: demain, au café, à trois heures; the day, place and time are unchanged. Mia is the recipient's name, not a new piece of grammar.
This short message can leave out a full sentence because the context is clear: Mia, tomorrow at the café at three o'clock. You are passing useful information, without adding a new date or a different time. You do not need a structure such as he said that.
Mia, demain au café à trois heures.
An optional supported run-through
Replay Leo's introduction and find three facts about him; check against the earlier explanation. Then take Ana's role: give her name, ask Leo to repeat the time, and send Mia the agreed day, place and time. All the words and models have already appeared, including Je m'appelle Ana and Tu peux répéter ?
Use the three lines below as support, or simply read and listen to them. To try again, change only the name in the name formula; keep the arrangement unchanged when passing it on. The goal is to understand, respond, recover a missed detail and relay it accurately; pauses and help are welcome, and this optional activity does not limit exploration.
Je m'appelle Ana.
- informal
Tu peux répéter ?
Mia, demain au café à trois heures.
