English -ity words in French: the -ité pattern
Many English nouns ending in -ity have a French cousin ending in -ité. The French spelling may also change inside the word: security → sécurité adds an accent within the stem as well as changing the ending. This is a useful pattern to recognize, but it does not work for every word.
Priority and security
« qualité » — quality: « Cette boutique vend des vêtements de bonne qualité. » — “This shop sells good-quality clothes.”; « La qualité de la nourriture est excellente. » — “The quality of the food is excellent.”
« activité » — activity: « La natation est mon activité préférée. » — “Swimming is my favorite activity.”; « Les enfants font une activité différente chaque jour. » — “The children do a different activity every day.”
« université » — university: « Ma sœur étudie dans une université près de chez nous. » — “My sister studies at a university near our home.”
« priorité » — priority: « Ma famille est ma priorité. » — “My family is my priority.”; « Trouver un travail est ma priorité numéro un. » — “Finding a job is my number one priority.”
« sécurité » — security or safety: « Cette porte nous offre plus de sécurité. » — “This door gives us more security.”; « Il nous faut une meilleure sécurité dans cet immeuble. » — “We need better security in this building.”
« possibilité » — possibility: « Il y a une possibilité de pluie demain. » — “There’s a possibility of rain tomorrow.”; « Il y a encore une possibilité qu'elle puisse venir. » — “There’s still a possibility that she can come.”

The accent and feminine gender
French writes an acute accent on the final é in these words: « qualité », « activité », « université », « priorité », « sécurité » and « possibilité ». Sometimes the stem changes too: security → sécurité also adds an accent to the first e. In quality → qualité and university → université, only the ending changes.
These French nouns are feminine, so articles and adjectives must agree with them: « Les enfants font une activité différente chaque jour. » English nouns do not have grammatical gender, so learn the French gender with each noun.
Cette boutique vend des vêtements de bonne qualité.
Les enfants font une activité différente chaque jour.
Ma sœur étudie dans une université près de chez nous.
Il y a une possibilité de pluie demain.
A different French word for opportunity
« ville » — city or town: « Nous vivons dans une petite ville. » — “We live in a small city.”
« occasion » — opportunity: « C’est une bonne occasion d’apprendre le français. » — “This is a good opportunity to learn French.”; « J’ai eu l’occasion de parler au professeur. » — “I had an opportunity to speak to the teacher.”
« opportunité » can mean appropriateness or timeliness, and it is also widely used in modern French for a favorable opportunity, especially in professional contexts.

Words that do not follow the pattern
Do not translate every English -ity word with a French -ité word: “city” is « ville », as in « Nous vivons dans une petite ville. »
For English “opportunity,” « occasion » is a useful everyday choice, as « C’est une bonne occasion d’apprendre le français. » and « J’ai eu l’occasion de parler au professeur. » show. Depending on the meaning, « possibilité » can also work.
French « opportunité » can refer to whether something is appropriate or timely. It is also widely used in modern French for a favorable opportunity, especially in professional contexts. It is therefore not always a false friend, but it does not automatically fit every English use of “opportunity.”
Nous vivons dans une petite ville.
C’est une bonne occasion d’apprendre le français.
J’ai eu l’occasion de parler au professeur.
