Making a reasoned decision in French

A school has one empty room and two proposals: a reading room or a kitchen for cooking lessons. You and Rita must recommend a use, then explain your agreement to an absent colleague. Combine familiar French frames: identify the source, compare the same criteria, justify your choice, address the objection and preserve the condition in writing.

Recover the task and the familiar frames

Listen to the two proposals: salle de lecture means reading room, calme means quiet, and cours de cuisine means cooking lessons; cuisine names both the room and cooking here. Recover the purpose frame pour des cours de cuisine (for cooking lessons), the comparison alors que (whereas), and the reason parce que (because). You will also reuse à mon avis (in my view), ce qui compte, c’est… (what matters is…), and à condition que… (provided that…); this task adds no new required grammar.

Identify whose estimates you are using

The contractor supplies both estimates; listen once for costs and again for dates. D’après l’entreprise means according to the company, coûterait means would cost, and serait prête means would be ready: these are estimates, not guaranteed results. Huit mille euros is €8,000 and quinze mille euros is €15,000; d’ici septembre means by September, while ne serait pas prête avant décembre means would not be ready before December. Keep the source and this uncertainty when you reuse the figures.

Recognize the supported building terms

The same contractor describes possible work: isolation phonique is soundproofing, ventilation is ventilation, and porte coupe-feu is a fire door. Aurait besoin de means would need; bonne ventilation here means adequate ventilation. Read or listen with these glosses, without memorizing the technical terms or reproducing the sentences. The information describes needs, not proof that a final quotation includes every expense or that regulations have been met.

Compare cost with cost, and date with date

Use the two contractor estimates to compare the same criterion: cost first, then completion date. Alors que links the contrasting options; en in la cuisine en coûterait quinze mille stands for euros. In the date comparison, repeat prête: la cuisine ne serait pas prête avant décembre. Availability by September and availability from September are related but different: d’ici gives a deadline, while dès gives the starting point.

Option A, alors que option B

Connect your choice to a stated priority

À mon avis introduces your judgment; parce qu’elle serait prête d’ici septembre gives its reason, with elle referring to the reading room. For this decision, your priority is a room available to pupils from September: disponible means available, pour les élèves means for the pupils, and dès septembre means from September. Reuse the familiar highlighting frame ce qui…, c’est… with a noun group here: une salle disponible pour les élèves. The estimates support this recommendation; they do not establish that the kitchen has no value.

À mon avis, choix parce que raison

Answer Rita without erasing her concern

Speaker A is you; speaker B is Rita, who says the town library is only five minutes away and asks why another reading room is needed. In her question, on includes you and Rita; n’est qu’à means is only … away, and avoir besoin de means need. Your reply restates the September-use priority; it does not prove the library is unsuitable. Rita then accepts conditionally: je peux accepter means I can accept, and à condition qu’on reparle… means provided that we discuss it again, with the familiar subjunctive reparle. En janvier means in January following the September and December dates in this case, and on again includes the two participants. Listen again, then say which objection remains relevant and which condition made agreement possible.

Write to the colleague who missed the discussion

Before looking at the model, write a short message as participant A: name both uses, attribute the two estimates, recommend the reading room for the stated priority, then report what you and Rita agreed and what remains open. Use the already shown costs, dates and frames; add no survey, guarantee or school-wide approval. For the written report, recover nous avons comparé (we compared), salle vide (empty room), Rita et moi nous sommes mis d’accord (Rita and I reached agreement), and on ne s’est pas encore mis d’accord (we have not reached agreement yet). Here on means the two participants, and pas encore means not yet. The model below is one possible message: it records agreement on a reading room subject to discussing the kitchen again, rather than agreement to build the kitchen.

Check the decision and its limits

Read your message as the absent colleague: can you identify the two options, the source, costs, dates, recommendation, objection and January condition? If the objection is missing, add Rita’s point about the nearby library from the conversation; the compact model does not repeat that point. Check that the contractor’s estimates have not become promises and that Rita’s conditional acceptance has not become a decision by the whole school. Agreement to reconsider the kitchen is not agreement about its eventual construction.
