Calendar and dates in Japanese: …月…日 and 何日ですか
By the end of this lesson, you can ask and understand what day a meeting is. The central idea is this: a Japanese date says the month first and then the day, each as a number plus its word, 月 (gatsu) and 日 (nichi): 4月10日 (shigatsu tōka), “April 10th”. To ask the day, …は何日ですか (wa nannichi desu ka). A few days have a reading of their own; they sit in a table to look up, and in this lesson you only hear and practise three of them.
Quick warm-up: numbers, today and か
These pieces come back in this lesson, even if you are seeing them for the first time. The numbers in their most common reading: 四 (yon, 4), 七 (nana, 7), 九 (kyū, 9). In dates, they appear as digits. 今日は火曜日です (kyō wa kayōbi desu), “Today is Tuesday”: 今日 (kyō) is “today”, は (wa) marks the topic and です (desu) closes the sentence, like “is”. 何時に働きますか (nanji ni hatarakimasu ka), “What time do you work?”: 何時 (nanji) is “what time”, and か (ka) at the end closes the question.

The calendar words: 何日, 会議, テスト and 誕生日
何日 (nannichi) asks the day of the month: “what date?”. 会議 (kaigi) is “meeting”, テスト (tesuto) is “test” and 誕生日 (tanjōbi) is “birthday”. These three are the topics of the dates in this lesson.
The months: number + 月 (gatsu)
A month is the number from 1 to 12 plus 月, read がつ (gatsu): 1月 (ichigatsu, January), 2月 (nigatsu), 3月 (sangatsu), 5月 (gogatsu), 6月 (rokugatsu), 8月 (hachigatsu), 10月 (jūgatsu), 11月 (jūichigatsu), 12月 (jūnigatsu). Three months use another reading of the number: 4月 is しがつ (shigatsu), 7月 is しちがつ (shichigatsu) and 9月 is くがつ (kugatsu). After the month's number, 月 is read gatsu; in 月曜日, “Monday”, the same 月 is read げつ (getsu). Listen to each month and notice where the reading changes.
What day is the meeting?
Two people arrange a meeting. Listen to the whole conversation: A asks the day, 会議は何日ですか, gets the date, 4月10日です, checks the weekday with 月曜日ですか (getsuyōbi desu ka), “Is it Monday?”, and asks the time with 会議は何時ですか (kaigi wa nanji desu ka), “What time is the meeting?”, with the 何時 of the warm-up. The answer 十時です (jūji desu) is “At ten o'clock”.

The date: …月…日です
The date comes in the order month, then day, as in “April 10th”, with no “the” and no “-th”: 4月10日です (shigatsu tōka desu), “It's April 10th”. The day is the number plus 日, read にち (nichi) on most days: 28日 is にじゅうはちにち (nijūhachinichi), 20 (にじゅう, nijū) + 8 (はち, hachi) + にち. A few days have a reading of their own, and in this lesson you hear three: 10日 とおか (tōka), 5日 いつか (itsuka) and, further on, 20日 はつか (hatsuka). To say what the date belongs to, the topic comes first with は: 誕生日は5月5日です (tanjōbi wa gogatsu itsuka desu), “My birthday is on May 5th”.

Asking the day: …は何日ですか
To ask the day, put the topic, は and 何日ですか: 会議は何日ですか (kaigi wa nannichi desu ka), “What day is the meeting?”. It is the same build as 何時ですか, swapping 何時 (nanji, what time) for 何日 (nannichi, what date). The answer is the date of the previous section: 4月10日です. In this lesson, 何日 asks the day of the month; the day of the week is asked with another word, which is not part of this lesson.

Reference table: how the days are read
Look this table up when you meet a date; do not memorise it all now. From 1日 to 10日, and on 14日, 20日 and 24日, the reading is special; 11日, 17日, 19日 and 28日 show the regular reading, number + にち. Of the special readings, in this lesson you only practise とおか, いつか and はつか. The table has no audio: hear those three readings in the examples.

Your turn: say the date
Say each sentence out loud before looking at the matching line below. First, say that the meeting is on April 10th. Then, ask what the date is today. Finally, say that the test is on September 20th, with 9月 read くがつ (kugatsu) and 20日 read はつか (hatsuka). To go on, swap 会議 for 誕生日 or テスト, and the date for 4月10日, 5月5日 or 9月20日.

In short: month, day and 何日ですか
A date is month + 月 and then day + 日: 4月10日 (shigatsu tōka). The topic comes first with は, and です closes: 誕生日は5月5日です. To ask the day, …は何日ですか: 会議は何日ですか. The special day readings are in the table; in this lesson you use とおか, いつか and はつか.
