いい and adjectives that only look like い-adjectives

English adjectives keep the same form before a noun and after “be,” but Japanese distinguishes い-adjectives, which go directly before nouns (“新しい本”), from な-adjectives, which need な (“きれいなテーブル”); the final い in きれい does not make it an い-adjective.

At sentence end, い-adjectives stand alone in plain speech (“この本は新しい”) and take です in polite speech (“この本は新しいです”), while な-adjectives and nouns use だ in plain speech and です in polite speech.

For negatives, change the final い to くない for い-adjectives (“高くない”); な-adjectives and nouns use ではない or its common contraction じゃない. Polite い-adjective negatives include くないです and the more formal くありません; な-adjective and noun negatives include ではないです or じゃないです and the more formal ではありません or じゃありません. いい is irregular: its negative is よくない (“あの本はよくない”), not いくない.
