English -tion Words in Japanese: Recognizing -shon Loanwords
Some English words ending in -tion have established Japanese forms ending in ション. Learn each complete word: the ending is a clue to existing loanwords, not a rule for making new ones. For motivation, モチベーション and the everyday word やる気 are both useful.
Examples marked formal use polite forms such as です and ます, suitable with staff or people you do not know well. Examples marked informal use plain forms, suitable with friends or family. These register differences come from the sentence forms, not from the loanwords themselves.

Information desks and general information
インフォメーション is used for visitor information and announcements. The examples here use 案内所 for an information desk: “案内所で聞いてみよう。” means “Let’s ask at the information desk.” For general information, Japanese usually uses 情報: “この情報はウェブサイトに載っています。” means “This information is on the website.”
- formal
すみません、案内所はどこですか。
- informal
案内所で聞いてみよう。
- formal
この情報はウェブサイトに載っています。
The common short form of presentation
プレゼンテーション is the established loanword for a presentation. プレゼン is its conventional short form; see the プレゼン card. Japanese does not shorten every English loanword in the same way.
“私のプレゼンは明日の朝です。” means “My presentation is tomorrow morning.” “プレゼン、わかりやすかったよ。” means “Your presentation was easy to understand.”
- formal
私のプレゼンは明日の朝です。
- informal
プレゼン、わかりやすかったよ。
Why the ending does not work for every word
An English -tion ending is a recognition clue, not a rule for making Japanese words. For a restaurant reservation, the ordinary word is 予約: “7時に2人で予約しています。” means “I have a reservation for two at seven.” This polite form suits speaking to restaurant staff, while “夕食のお店は予約が必要だね。” is a casual comment to a companion.
Even established loans may cover fewer meanings than their English originals: アクション is common for film action and the action genre, but it is not the everyday translation of every English use of action. Learn each loanword with its usual meaning and phrases, such as アクション映画 for an action film.
- formal
7時に2人で予約しています。
- informal
夕食のお店は予約が必要だね。
Why a Japanese mansion is not an English mansion
マンション resembles English mansion, but its meaning is different. It usually refers to an apartment building or condominium, not a large private house. “駅の近くに分譲マンションを買いました。” means “We bought a condominium near the station.”
For a grand private house, 豪邸 fits: “あの家族はお金持ちで、豪邸に住んでいる。” means “That family is wealthy and lives in a grand house.”
- formal
駅の近くに分譲マンションを買いました。
- formal
両親は分譲マンションに住んでいます。
- informal
あの家族はお金持ちで、豪邸に住んでいる。
