English loanwords shortened in Japanese
Japanese uses familiar shortened forms for many English loanwords. Learn テレビ and コンビニ, then compare how Japanese shortens a single loanword and combines parts of a compound. These forms are conventional, so you need to learn which ones Japanese speakers use.
Everyday shortened loanwords
- テレビtelevision
- コンビニconvenience store
Shortening one loanword
These forms shorten a single borrowed word: テレビジョン becomes テレビ, スーパーマーケット becomes スーパー, and コンビニエンスストア becomes コンビニ.
| English name | Japanese loanword before shortening | Short form |
|---|---|---|
| 英語名 | 日本語の借用語(省略前) | 短縮形 |
| television | テレビジョン | テレビ |
| supermarket | スーパーマーケット | スーパー |
| convenience store | コンビニエンスストア | コンビニ |
Combining parts of a compound
Japanese can keep a short part of each word in a compound: リモートコントロール becomes リモコン, エアコンディショナー becomes エアコン, and パーソナルコンピューター becomes パソコン.
| English name | Parts kept from each word | Established short form |
|---|---|---|
| 英語名 | 各語から残した部分 | 定着した短縮形 |
| remote control | remote → リモ+control → コン | リモコン |
| air conditioner | air → エア+conditioner → コン | エアコン |
| personal computer | personal → パソ+computer → コン | パソコン |
Using the shortened forms
Use the conventional Japanese forms in everyday speech. The examples mark the sentence style: formal uses polite ます or ています forms, while informal examples use plain forms. English does not mark politeness on the verb in the same way, so choose the Japanese style for the person and situation. Formal: 「彼女は仕事が終わるとテレビを見ます。」, 「食べ物はスーパーで買っています。」, 「仕事でパソコンを使っています。」, 「家の近くにコンビニがあります。」 Informal: 「リモコンが見つからない。」, 「エアコンが動かない。」, 「コンビニに行くよ。」
- formal
彼女は仕事が終わるとテレビを見ます。
- formal
食べ物はスーパーで買っています。
- informal
リモコンが見つからない。
- informal
エアコンが動かない。
- formal
仕事でパソコンを使っています。
- formal
家の近くにコンビニがあります。
- informal
コンビニに行くよ。
Established forms and meanings
You cannot shorten English words freely and expect Japanese speakers to recognize the result; learn the established form. スーパー ordinarily means “supermarket,” so it does not translate every English use of “super.” Also, Japanese マンション usually means a condominium or apartment building, not an English mansion; for a grand, luxurious house, use 豪邸. Formal: 「両親は分譲マンションに住んでいます。」 Informal: 「あの家族はお金持ちで、豪邸に住んでいる。」
- formal
両親は分譲マンションに住んでいます。
- informal
あの家族はお金持ちで、豪邸に住んでいる。
