Checking meaning and understanding in Portuguese
You want to move a desk lamp to the kitchen, but the word portátil is unfamiliar. Ask about the word, check what the explanation means for you, then repeat the same information in your own words. A short explanation is enough: you do not need a technical definition.
Words for a practical explanation
A luminária de mesa is a desk lamp; a cozinha is the kitchen and a cadeira is a chair. Portátil means portable, fácil means easy, carregar means carry and usar means use. Leve means light in weight; pequena means small, here agreeing with feminine luminária or cadeira. Em outras palavras means in other words. Listen to the cards: these words will also support the final task.
A wish and a meaning are different
Querer can express a wish: eu quero usar means I want to use; você quer usar means you want to use. After quero or quer, usar stays in the infinitive. In quer dizer, however, the combination means mean, not want to speak. O que quer dizer…? asks what something means. You may also see quero dizer when a speaker explains their own intended meaning.
Recall dizer: eu digo = I say, você diz = you say, disse = said. In você está dizendo, está + dizendo presents what the person is saying now. Que then introduces the content: dizendo que… = saying that…. In this lesson, posso = I can and você pode = you can; carregar stays in the infinitive. Na cozinha means in the kitchen; para a cozinha means to the kitchen.
Eu quero usar esta luminária de mesa na cozinha.
A word interrupts a real plan
A wants to use the lamp in the kitchen. B calls it portátil. A asks for its meaning, tests a practical interpretation, and then rephrases the explanation. Listen to the whole exchange before looking at each tool. The reply confirms that this particular lamp can be carried to the kitchen; it does not claim that every portable object suits every room.
- A
Eu quero usar esta luminária de mesa na cozinha.
- B
Esta luminária de mesa é portátil.
- A
O que quer dizer “portátil”?
- B
Quer dizer que é fácil de carregar.
- A
Você está dizendo que posso carregar a luminária de mesa para a cozinha?
Are you saying that I can carry the desk lamp to the kitchen?
- B
Sim. Você pode carregar a luminária de mesa para a cozinha.
- A
Em outras palavras, esta luminária de mesa é fácil de carregar.
Ask about the word
O que quer dizer “portátil”? means What does “portable” mean? Quote the unfamiliar word. The answer uses quer dizer que + a complete statement: it means that it is easy to carry. In that answer, the lamp is understood, so Portuguese need not repeat a subject pronoun.
You can also test a possible meaning: “Leve” quer dizer “pequena”? means Does “light” mean “small”? This is a question, not a definition. An everyday description can explain the word; avoid replacing one unfamiliar term with a harder one.
O que quer dizer palavra?
O que quer dizer “portátil”?
Quer dizer que é fácil de carregar.
“Leve” quer dizer “pequena”?
Check your interpretation with the speaker
Você está dizendo que…? means Are you saying that…? Add the interpretation you want checked. In the example, posso refers to A, the person asking; in B’s reply, você pode refers to that same person. Keep que before the complete statement; do not add English question order inside it.
This checks understanding; it does not necessarily disagree. Tone and context matter. A firm or incredulous delivery can sound challenging. Unlike a report with disse que, this question leaves the interpretation open for confirmation or correction.
Você está dizendo que interpretação?
Você está dizendo que posso carregar a luminária de mesa para a cozinha?
Are you saying that I can carry the desk lamp to the kitchen?
Sim. Você pode carregar a luminária de mesa para a cozinha.
Say the same thing in different words
Em outras palavras introduces a clearer version of the same message. Here portátil is unpacked as fácil de carregar: easy to carry. In fácil de carregar, Portuguese uses de + infinitive where English uses to carry.
Compare the three examples. The restatement preserves the explanation about carrying the lamp. It adds no claim about its size, price or how long it works. A paraphrase is faithful to the information available, even when you use different words.
Esta luminária de mesa é portátil.
Quer dizer que é fácil de carregar.
Em outras palavras, esta luminária de mesa é fácil de carregar.
Does the explanation tell you the size?
Read the question as A’s possible interpretation: Does that mean the desk lamp is small? From the conversation alone, can you answer yes?
No: portátil was explained as easy to carry, not small. The lamp might be small, but that information was not given. Ask about size separately if it matters. The question itself is useful Portuguese; the conclusion is what needs checking.
Quer dizer que a luminária de mesa é pequena?
Your turn: a chair instead of a lamp
In a furniture shop, someone says Esta cadeira é leve: This chair is light. Use only the words above. Before reading the remaining examples, ask whether leve means pequena; answer as the salesperson with no and an explanation about carrying; check that you understood; then rephrase with em outras palavras.
Compare your version with the four model lines after the opening statement. Here light concerns weight, and easy to carry is the practical explanation of this chair’s lightness. The exchange says nothing about its size. Can you explain why a conclusion about size would add information?
Esta cadeira é leve.
“Leve” quer dizer “pequena”?
Não. Quer dizer que é fácil de carregar.
Você está dizendo que a cadeira é fácil de carregar?
Em outras palavras, a cadeira é fácil de carregar.
Three ways to keep a conversation going
Ask O que quer dizer…? about an unfamiliar word. Use Você está dizendo que…? to offer an interpretation for checking. Use em outras palavras to rephrase information that was actually given. If you are unsure, leave room for the other person to correct you. A clear everyday explanation is enough.
