Writing an evidence-based review in Portuguese

You are writing a short review of a neighbourhood library for people choosing where to study. Link your criteria to what you observed, then say who the service suits. A convincing conclusion goes as far as the evidence allows.

Compare, concede and justify

Recall mais silencioso que (quieter than) and melhor opção (better option): a comparison needs a relevant criterion. Apesar de + noun means despite: it accepts a limitation without abandoning the conclusion. Não demonstra que means does not establish that; this distinction between an observation and a broader claim matters again here.

A review for people choosing a study space

Read and listen to the six sentences as one review: criteria → experience → assessment → audience → limit → conclusion. Biblioteca do bairro is neighbourhood library; silêncio, quietness; disponibilidade de mesas, table availability; visitas, visits; vantagem, advantage; espera, waiting; limitação, limitation. Espaço is space or venue, sem pressa means without rushing, mesas livres means free tables, and pausa curta is a short break. The writer reports a twenty-minute wait on one of two visits, so the recommendation distinguishes a long study session from a short break.

Choose criteria before choosing praise

Avaliei … pelo silêncio e pela disponibilidade de mesas means I evaluated … by its quietness and table availability: pelo and pela combine por with o and a. In Por esse critério … foi irregular, the writer interprets the experience as inconsistent availability, rather than claiming a permanent shortage. Irregular here means inconsistent, not an irregular grammatical form. These two criteria do different work: quietness supports studying; waiting reduces the usefulness of a short visit.

Avaliei serviço pelo / pela critério

Recommend an option to a specific audience

Indico o espaço a quem pode estudar sem pressa means I recommend the space to those who can study without rushing; a quem identifies the people who benefit. It does not mean the writer knows all those people personally. Apesar dessa limitação acknowledges the waiting problem and keeps the recommendation for that audience; dessa means de + essa. Favorável means positive or favourable: the conclusion is positive for an afternoon of study, not for every purpose.

Apesar de limitação, indico opção a quem necessidade

Keep the conclusion within the experience

Duas visitas não demonstram que sempre há mesas livres means two visits do not prove that free tables are always available. Há expresses existence and stays singular with mesas; here, unlike possessive tem, it does not mean owns. The limit does not cancel the observed advantage: it prevents a universal claim from a small experience. Avoid adding always, never or the best library in town when the review provides no evidence for them.

Your turn: a different reading room

Imagine a sala de leitura (reading room): on three visits you never waited for a table, but quietness was an advantage on only two; em apenas duas delas means on only two of them. Before reading the two possible sentences below, write a four-sentence review with these facts: name the criteria, report the experience, recommend to someone with pouco tempo (little time), and state a limit. You may use quanto ao silêncio (regarding quietness) and menos favorável (less positive); do not invent waiting times or prices. Compare your text with the possible answer, then transfer the method to a familiar service using only your own observations.

Criteria, evidence, audience and limit

Check four links: what you assess, what you observed, who benefits and how far your conclusion reaches. Avaliei … pelo/pela names a criterion; apesar dessa limitação concedes; indico … a quem defines the audience. Keep two or three resources that serve your argument rather than collecting synonyms for good.
