Clear stories in Brazilian Portuguese: background, events and results
Tell a friend what happened at home yesterday. You will connect work already in progress, two simultaneous actions, the completion of lunch and its result. The goal is a clear account, rather than a list of past forms.
Recover the past viewpoint
Trabalhar means to work: estou trabalhando is I am working, and estava trabalhando is I was working. The -ndo form trabalhando presents the process with estar; estava places that viewpoint in the past. Eu means I, ontem means yesterday and em casa means at home. Trabalhava presents work as background or a past habit; trabalhei presents a completed stretch of work. The choice is not a rule about short versus long actions: even a long action can be presented as completed.
Ontem, eu estava trabalhando em casa.
The words for this account
Fazer means make and comer means eat; o almoço is lunch, and juntos means together. In this account, fazia means was making, fez means made and comemos means we ate. Here comemos refers to yesterday; the same written form can also mean we eat in a present context. Enquanto means while, quando means when in a statement, and no fim das contas means in the end, introducing the outcome.
One connected account: a lunch at home
Listen to the four sentences in order as one account, then read them together. First, the speaker sets yesterday’s scene at home; Ana prepares lunch while the speaker works, then the account presents the completed preparation. The last sentence presents Ana’s preparation of lunch as the reason they eat together. Por isso means so or for that reason, referring back to what was just said. The account does not say that lunch preparation stopped the work.
Ontem, eu estava trabalhando em casa.
Enquanto eu trabalhava, Ana fazia o almoço.
Eu estava trabalhando quando Ana fez o almoço.
Ana fez o almoço, por isso comemos juntos.
Locate an event and overlap two actions
In Eu estava trabalhando quando Ana fez o almoço, the work is in progress during the preparation, which fez presents as a completed event. Quando relates the event to the ongoing work here; it does not by itself mean that the work stopped. Enquanto eu trabalhava, Ana fazia o almoço places both activities within an overlapping period. Starting with Enquanto Ana fazia o almoço changes the point of departure, while keeping the same people and facts. English uses was working for both estava trabalhando and the background trabalhava here; Portuguese can present the same activity with either viewpoint without requiring estar in every background clause.
Enquanto eu trabalhava / Ana fazia o almoço, Ana fazia o almoço / eu trabalhava.
Eu estava trabalhando quando Ana fez o almoço.
Enquanto eu trabalhava, Ana fazia o almoço.
Enquanto Ana fazia o almoço, eu trabalhava.
Explain the result, then close the account
Ana fez o almoço, por isso comemos juntos links a stated reason to its result; por isso is not just a marker meaning next. Compare fazia, which views lunch preparation in progress, with fez, which presents its completion. To close, No fim das contas, comemos juntos gives the outcome already supported by the story. Treat no fim das contas as a whole expression here, not as a literal calculation. A conclusion can restate the useful result rather than add another event.
Ana fez o almoço, por isso comemos juntos.
No fim das contas, comemos juntos.
Retell faithfully, then adapt
Before reading the models below, retell the account to a friend in three or four connected sentences: work was in progress; Ana made lunch while you worked; you ate together as a result. Start the simultaneous part with Ana, then end with the shared meal, without adding a claim that the work stopped. Compare your account with the models and listen again.
For a new account, picture another day at home with someone you know and use the same verbs, changing Ana to that person’s name. Decide which action was in progress, what happened and what the outcome was; keep the facts compatible instead of copying a consequence that did not happen. You succeed if your friend can identify who worked, who made lunch and how the account ended.
Eu estava trabalhando quando Ana fez o almoço.
Enquanto Ana fazia o almoço, eu trabalhava.
Ana fez o almoço, por isso comemos juntos.
No fim das contas, comemos juntos.
Background → overlap → event → outcome
Use estava trabalhando for the process in the past, quando to relate the completed preparation to the ongoing work, enquanto to overlap work and lunch preparation, and por isso for a consequence. Close with a supported outcome, such as No fim das contas, comemos juntos. Keep who did what clear, rather than adding more timelines.
No fim das contas, comemos juntos.
