English -able and -ible Words in Brazilian Portuguese

Many English adjectives ending in -able or -ible have a related Brazilian Portuguese adjective ending in -ável or -ível. The endings can help you recognize words, but learn each whole Portuguese adjective with its stem and meaning. Notice the written accents and how the endings change to agree with the nouns they describe.

Adjectives ending in -ível

Many familiar English adjectives ending in -able or -ible have related Portuguese forms ending in -ável or -ível. For example, “comfortable” is “confortável,” and “possible” is “possível.” Learn each Portuguese word with its stem and meaning.

Recognizing the -able/-ible pattern

Look for -ável or -ível at the end of a Portuguese adjective when you know an English word ending in -able or -ible. The match can help you recognize the word, but it does not guarantee the same everyday meaning.

adjetivo em inglês terminado em -able ou -ible → adjetivo completo em português terminado em -ável ou -ível, aprendido como uma palavra inteira, como confortável.

Accents and adjective agreement

Portuguese writes an acute accent in words such as “visível” and “acessível.” Adjectives also agree with the noun they describe: “visível” becomes “visíveis” with a plural noun, and “acessível” becomes “acessíveis.” English adjectives do not change this way, so remember to match the Portuguese adjective to its noun.

Different endings and a false friend

The pattern does not always give you the Portuguese word: reliable is “confiável,” and edible is “comestível.” Learn these whole words and their meanings. Also, “sensível” means sensitive; English sensible usually means “sensato,” as in “uma escolha sensata.”
