Requests, refusals and disagreement in Brazilian Portuguese
You need help today, but your colleague has to work. Learn to keep a request or disagreement clear while making room for the other person: acknowledge their position, state your limit or preference, then offer an alternative when you have one. The effect also depends on your tone, relationship and situation.
Bring back the useful pieces
Você pode me ajudar hoje? means “Can you help me today?”: você = you, pode = can, me = me, ajudar = help, hoje = today. Posso te ajudar amanhã means “I can help you tomorrow”: posso is the I-form of poder, te means you as the recipient and amanhã means tomorrow. Everyday Brazilian speech often combines te with você; this lesson uses that combination without teaching a formal pronoun-placement system.
Conversar means talk, trabalhar means work and tenho que trabalhar means I have to work; after posso, pode and tenho que, these action verbs stay in the infinitive. De manhã means in the morning, à tarde means in the afternoon, ou means or and aqui means here. You may remember poderia, “could”, from suggestions: here the new request opening keeps pode, “can”.
Você pode me ajudar hoje?
Posso te ajudar amanhã.
One request becomes a workable arrangement
Listen to the exchange between two colleagues: A needs help, and B cannot help today because of work. They settle on a conversation tomorrow morning instead. Entendo means I understand, mas means but, prefiro means I prefer and você prefere means you prefer; the question asks which time the other person prefers.
The last line, Obrigado por entender, means “Thank you for understanding”: por gives the reason for the thanks and entender is understand in the infinitive. B uses obrigado here; a speaker using the feminine form says obrigada. The model offers an alternative rather than pretending that the original request has been accepted.
- A
Será que você pode me ajudar hoje?
- B
Entendo, mas hoje não posso ajudar. Tenho que trabalhar.

Você prefere conversar amanhã de manhã ou à tarde?
- B
Prefiro conversar amanhã de manhã.

Amanhã de manhã posso conversar.
- B
Obrigado por entender.
Understanding is not the same as agreeing
Entendo, mas… acknowledges what the other person says, then introduces a contrasting position; it does not promise agreement. In Entendo, mas hoje não posso ajudar, the refusal is explicit: não comes before posso, and hoje limits it to today. Tenho que trabalhar gives a real reason, rather than leaving the listener to guess.
Entendo, mas prefiro conversar aqui disagrees about the place: “I understand, but I prefer to talk here.” Hoje não posso, mas amanhã posso ajudar adds a possible alternative; you do not have to invent an alternative or give a private reason. A short direct refusal can suit an urgent situation or a close relationship, and a longer sentence can still sound dismissive.
Entendo, mas hoje não posso ajudar. Tenho que trabalhar.
Entendo, mas prefiro conversar aqui.
Hoje não posso, mas amanhã posso ajudar.
Choose an action with prefiro or prefere
Preferir means to prefer: eu prefiro is I prefer, while você prefere is you prefer. Notice the stem vowel: the e of preferir becomes i in prefiro, but remains e in prefere; learn these two spoken forms, without extending that change to every form. In these examples, the preferred action follows as an infinitive: prefiro conversar, not an English-style “prefer to” translated word for word with an extra preposition.
The question Você prefere conversar amanhã de manhã ou à tarde? offers two times; Prefiro conversar amanhã de manhã selects one. A place can follow too: prefiro conversar aqui. Porque means because, so Prefiro conversar amanhã, porque hoje tenho que trabalhar connects the choice to its reason.
Prefiro conversar amanhã / aqui
Você prefere conversar amanhã de manhã ou à tarde?
Prefiro conversar amanhã de manhã.
Entendo, mas prefiro conversar aqui.
Prefiro conversar amanhã, porque hoje tenho que trabalhar.
Make space for an answer
Compare Você pode me ajudar hoje? with Será que você pode me ajudar hoje?: both ask for help today. The opening será que makes the second question less direct and can make room for a refusal; it is not a guarantee of politeness. Learn será que as an opening here: será is a form of ser, but the request is about today, not necessarily a prediction about the future. The rest keeps você pode + infinitive, with no subject–verb inversion and no new subjunctive.
For recognition, Será que você pode esperar um pouquinho? asks “Could you wait a little bit?”: esperar means wait, um means a and pouquinho is a diminutive in the expression um pouquinho, a little bit. Here it presents the wait as small and may soften the request; it does not guarantee a short wait, affection or a friendly tone.
Será que você pode ajudar / conversar?
Você pode me ajudar hoje?
Será que você pode me ajudar hoje?
Será que você pode esperar um pouquinho?
Try it with a different choice
Before reading the models, answer a colleague who asks for help today: say that today is impossible but tomorrow is possible. Then explain that you prefer to talk tomorrow because you have to work today. Finally, move to a new situation: the other person suggests a different place, but you prefer to talk here; acknowledge the suggestion and state your preference.
Use only the pieces already introduced: hoje, amanhã, não posso, posso ajudar, prefiro conversar, porque, tenho que trabalhar, entendo, mas and aqui. The three model answers below show possible solutions; compare their meaning with yours rather than memorizing their exact order. Say each response again for a close friend and for a colleague you barely know, changing your tone and deciding whether to add a reason; there is no single wording that fits every relationship.
Hoje não posso, mas amanhã posso ajudar.
Prefiro conversar amanhã, porque hoje tenho que trabalhar.
Entendo, mas prefiro conversar aqui.
Check clarity and the relationship
Can your listener tell what you are asking, refusing or choosing? Entendo, mas… acknowledges a position without surrendering yours; prefiro + infinitive names your preferred action; será que você pode + infinitive opens a less direct request. Posso te ajudar amanhã offers something you really can do, and porque can explain a choice.
Listen again and make a new three-part exchange with the same vocabulary: request help, refuse today with a reason, and settle on tomorrow. Check that prefiro refers to your choice and prefere to the other person’s, and that your alternative does not contradict your refusal. Clear wording, attention to context and the way you speak work together.
Será que você pode me ajudar hoje?
Entendo, mas prefiro conversar aqui.
Posso te ajudar amanhã.
