Following natural conversation in Brazilian Portuguese

Two colleagues are choosing where to hold a meeting. Learn to show how your point connects to theirs, ask to finish it and check an implied meaning instead of guessing. Allow about eleven minutes to read, or twenty with audio and the speaking task.

Words for the conversation

The cards give the places and the problem: reunião = meeting, cafeteria = café, biblioteca = library, barulho = noise, silenciosa = quiet, agreeing with the feminine place names here. More building blocks: amanhã = tomorrow; sobre = about; sala = room; para = for; mais = more; mas = but. Quer dizer here is the marker “I mean”, used to rephrase your own point.

Recover a preference and a check

Eu prefiro a biblioteca means “I prefer the library”; gosto da cafeteria means “I like the café”, with da = de + a after gostar de. Você addresses one person; choose a form of address to suit the person and setting rather than translating English you into one fixed level of formality. Você está falando sério? means “Are you serious?”: está falando presents the speaking now, and sério here means “seriously”. Checking an interpretation leaves the other person room to correct it.

A point interrupted, then clarified

Listen to the eight turns as one exchange: A has not finished explaining the choice when B reacts to the noisy café. B’s next reply confirms that the apparent praise was ironic; A asks to finish, and B yields the turn. A can like the café while accepting that the library is quieter, and B adds that it has a meeting room. Só um instante = just a moment; posso terminar? = can I finish?; claro = of course; depois eu falo = I’ll speak afterwards. Foi ironia = that was irony; ótimo = great, as a reaction.

Three links between turns

In “Então, sobre a reunião de amanhã…”, então resumes the topic: something like “So, about…”, rather than a time word meaning then. Quer dizer introduces a clearer or corrected version of your own point; A qualifies the initial preference instead of merely repeating it. Aliás adds a relevant side point, here the existence of a meeting room. These markers are not interchangeable, and their effect depends on what came before. After the room information, então can also introduce a conclusion, as in the final example.

Ask for space, then leave space

“Só um instante, posso terminar?” asks to finish a point without attacking the other person. Terminar here means finishing your contribution, not ending the conversation. “Claro, depois eu falo” explicitly gives the turn back; the present falo can refer to what the speaker will do next. A calm tone can make the request less confrontational, while the same words can sound annoyed in another tone. Practise both turns, then finish your point briefly so the other person can respond.

Check the intended meaning

“Ótimo, mais barulho na reunião!” looks like praise in its words, but in this exchange it criticizes a noisy choice. Context and delivery can suggest irony; the word ótimo alone does not prove it. “Você está falando sério ou foi ironia?” asks which reading was intended, and “Foi ironia” confirms it. Ou = or; irony is not an insult you must answer in kind. The audio is a reading of the line, so use the exchange and the explicit reply rather than treating a synthetic voice as a reliable irony detector.

Recognize two situated samples

These are staged samples for recognition, not quotations from regional recordings or production targets. In a conversation between friends set in São Paulo, “Cê tá falando sério?” has cê for você and tá for está; these reductions are also heard elsewhere and are not suitable for every written setting. In a sample with a speaker from Minas Gerais, “Uai, mais barulho?” expresses surprise. Uai is associated with speech from Minas Gerais, but neither its use nor its effect is identical for all speakers. Do not translate it as a fixed word such as why; recover the reaction from the situation. Two samples cannot prepare you to understand all regional speech.

A new get-together: keep the thread

New situation: friends are planning a Saturday get-together, and this time the café is quieter than the library and has a room for groups. Encontro = get-together, sábado = Saturday, opção = option, porque = because, grupos = groups; all the other building blocks have appeared above. Before reading the examples, give three connected turns: resume the topic with então, make the café suggestion more precise with quer dizer, then add the room information with aliás. A partner interrupts: ask to finish, let them answer, and complete the point; if they repeat the earlier apparent praise, check whether it was ironic rather than assuming so. The examples offer one possible three-part opening, not a script you must copy. Change the place or the reason and try again; check that your links and the other speaker’s intended meaning remain clear.

Follow the link, confirm the meaning

Retake the topic with então, rephrase with quer dizer, add a relevant point with aliás, and ask for the turn when you need it. In the original meeting discussion, “Então, a biblioteca é a melhor opção” draws a conclusion; melhor opção means best option. Success here means keeping a new conversation coherent and checking an uncertain implication, rather than identifying every regional expression.
