Prepositions and article contractions in Brazilian Portuguese
In Portuguese, some prepositions join the article or demonstrative that follows them. English keeps these words separate. You’ll learn how forms vary with the article or demonstrative, how este, esse and aquele show distance, and when Brazilian speakers use informal pra and pro.

Prepositions joined to definite articles
Using contractions with articles
Portuguese joins these prepositions to a definite article: de + o/a/os/as becomes do/da/dos/das; em becomes no/na/nos/nas; and por becomes pelo/pela/pelos/pelas. When the preposition is a, it combines with the article: a + o becomes ao, and a + a becomes à. These forms occur in writing and speech; à takes a grave accent. English keeps the words separate, so check the article’s gender and number. Examples: “Venho do hotel.” “O livro está no carro.” “Vou ao hotel.” “Ela vai à mesa.” “A gente caminha pelo hotel.” “Eles correm pelo hotel.”
Venho do hotel.
O livro está no carro.
Vou ao hotel.
Ela vai à mesa.
A gente caminha pelo hotel.
Eles correm pelo hotel.

Using contractions with demonstratives
De and em also join demonstratives: de forms deste, desse or daquele, for example, while em forms neste, nesse or naquele. Este points to something near the speaker; esse points to something near the listener; aquele points to something farther away. English “this” and “that” do not make these distinctions in the same way. Isto, isso and aquilo are the corresponding forms used without a gendered noun. Examples: “Venho deste hotel.” “O livro está neste carro aqui.” “Ela vem desse hotel aí.” “Minha bolsa está nesse carro aí.” “A gente vem daquele hotel ali.” “O livro dela está naquele carro ali.” “Gosto disto.” “Ela gosta disso.” “A gente gosta daquilo ali.” “Tem água nisto.” “Tem leite nisso.” “Tem água naquilo.”
Venho deste hotel.
O livro está neste carro aqui.
Ela vem desse hotel aí.
Minha bolsa está nesse carro aí.
A gente vem daquele hotel ali.
O livro dela está naquele carro ali.
Gosto disto.
Ela gosta disso.
A gente gosta daquilo ali.
Tem água nisto.
Tem leite nisso.
Tem água naquilo.
Standard and informal ways to say “to”
When the preposition is a, it combines with the definite article: a + o becomes ao, and a + a becomes à. These forms occur in both writing and speech: “Vou ao hotel.” “Ela vai à mesa.” Para can also introduce a destination; para o and para a are standard written forms. In informal Brazilian speech and writing, para often becomes pra, para o becomes pro, and para a becomes pra: “A gente vai pro hotel.” “Ele vai pra mesa.” These informal spellings come from para forms; they are not contractions of ao and à.
Vou ao hotel.
Ela vai à mesa.
- informal
A gente vai pro hotel.
- informal
Ele vai pra mesa.
