Discussing changes in society in Japanese
Learn to discuss how remote work and phone payments have changed everyday life. Compare earlier habits with current routines, explain different experiences, and ask follow-up questions. The formal lines use polite です and ます forms, suitable for unfamiliar people and many workplace conversations, while the informal lines use plain forms for people you are close to. Japanese often leaves out “I” and “you” when the context makes the person clear.

Explain causes, contrasts, and other people's views
変わる means that something changes, so “朝の過ごし方が変わりました” makes the morning routine the subject; unlike English “change,” this verb cannot also take a direct object meaning something you change. Use 今では or 最近は to introduce the present situation and 前は for earlier habits; 持ち歩いてた is a casual shortening of 持ち歩いていた, meaning “used to carry around” here.
With 影響する, mark the affected area with に, as in “それって、買い物の仕方に影響してる?”, where って introduces the topic casually and してる shortens している. 慣れる means “get used to,” so use a noun plus に or a dictionary-form verb plus のに, as in “スマホで払うのにどうやって慣れたの?”, whose final の makes this a casual explanatory question.
Give a reason with ので or から, introduce an example with 例えば, and contrast experiences with でも or けど; “通勤しなくなったので、朝の過ごし方が変わりました” puts the reason first, with しなくなった meaning “no longer commute.” In the informal family discussion, って can report what someone says and みたい presents an impression, while “現金のほうがいい” expresses a preference for cash without translating English “prefer” as a separate verb.
- formal
通勤しなくなったので、朝の過ごし方が変わりました。
It has changed my mornings because I no longer travel to the office.
- formal
最初は同僚に会えなくて寂しかったです。でも、今は子どもと過ごす時間が増えました。
At first, I missed my colleagues, but now I have more time with my children.
- formal
私は少し違いますね。例えば、うちは狭いので、仕事がしにくいです。
My experience is different; for example, I find it hard to work in my small flat.
- informal
母はスマホで払うと早くて楽だって言うけど、父はまだ現金のほうがいいみたい。
My mother finds it quick and easy, but my father still prefers cash.
- informal
うちの祖母も現金のほうがいいって。いくら使ったか目で見てわかるから。
My grandmother prefers cash too, because she can see how much she spends.
