Greetings in Japanese
Japanese greetings follow the clock: おはようございます in the morning, こんにちは for both hello and good afternoon, こんばんは in the evening. English has no polite verb endings, but Japanese does — with strangers, older people and colleagues you end sentences in です or ます, and with friends you drop them, so お元気ですか? becomes just 元気? Japanese also avoids saying "you" to someone's face: to send a question back politely, say ("and on your side?") rather than あなた.
Saying hello: one greeting for the morning, one for the day, one for the evening — and やあ for friends
Hello!
Good morning!
Good afternoon!
Good evening!
Saying goodbye — さようなら sounds final, so friends say じゃあね or また明日
Goodbye!
Bye!
See you later!
See you tomorrow!
Good night!
