Learn to read simple menu choices and order food and drinks in Japanese. Practice requesting changes, explaining an allergy or dietary restriction, and asking for the bill in polite and casual speech.

Food and restaurant words

Read these menu choices

Place an order

Ask to leave out an ingredient

Choose a replacement

Explain a food allergy

Explain a dietary restriction

Japanese does not change its pronoun for formal and informal “you” the way French does; politeness mainly comes from verb endings and the wording of the request. Use the polite forms with restaurant staff, such as “ベジタリアンです。” Casual speech, such as “ベジタリアン向けの料理はある?” or “お会計、お願い。” fits friends or a relaxed setting. English does not mark this difference in the verb, so pay attention to the Japanese ending. To say you are allergic to something, use

Ask for the bill

In a restaurant, “お会計をお願いします。” is a polite, natural way to ask for the bill or to pay. お会計 refers to the bill or settling the account, and お願いします makes the request polite. “お会計、お願い。” is a shorter, casual request. Japanese marks this register difference through the request wording and ending. Use the polite form with staff; reserve the casual form for someone you know well.
