Shopping and exchanging items in Japanese

Level A2

Shopping and exchanging items in Japanese

Learn to check prices and sizes, ask to try clothes on and arrange an exchange in Japanese. Unlike English, Japanese regularly marks politeness through verb endings: use the polite forms with です and ます when speaking to unfamiliar shop staff, and the plain forms in familiar conversation. Japanese often leaves out “I” and “you” when the situation makes them clear, so you do not need to translate every English pronoun. To ask for something larger or smaller, put もっと before 大きい or 小さい; these adjectives do not change for gender or number.
