Everyday verbs in Portuguese

This lesson teaches four verbs you'll use every day in Portuguese: fazer (do), ir (go), querer (want) and gostar (like). Unlike English, where only he, she and it add an -s, Portuguese changes the verb ending for almost every person, and fazer, ir and querer are irregular, so it pays to learn their forms by heart. Gostar always takes de before what you like, as in "Eu gosto de gatos", and de joins with the next word: dessa música, do café. With friends you say você, and to show respect o senhor or a senhora, with the same verb form either way.

The four verbs: fazer, ir, querer, gostar

Fazer, ir, querer and gostar in the present, person by person

One ending for each person — and você takes the ele form

In English only he, she and it change the verb: she does, he goes. In Portuguese almost every person has its own ending: eu faço, nós fazemos, eles fazem. Você, o senhor and a senhora all take the same form as ele and ela, so "você gosta" and "ela gosta" look alike.

Gostar is regular, but fazer, ir and querer are not: eu vou, ele vai, eles vão. In everyday speech a gente often replaces nós, and it also takes the ele form: "A gente vai à praia". Since the ending already shows who the subject is, eu is often left out: "Quero um celular novo".

Fazer + an activity: Eu faço a lição de casa

Eu faço a lição de casa.

Ir + para or a, then a place: Eu vou para o trabalho, nós vamos à praia

Eu vou para o trabalho.

Querer + a thing or a verb, with no "to": quero um cachorro, quero ir para casa

Eu quero um cachorro.

Gostar de + a thing or a verb: gosto de gatos, gosto de cozinhar

Eu gosto de gatos.

Two friends plan Saturday: O que você quer fazer no sábado?
