Putting past events in order in Brazilian Portuguese

Like English “had done,” Brazilian Portuguese uses tinha plus a past participle to describe an action completed before another past event. Já means “already” and usually comes before tinha; for “not yet,” use ainda não before tinha rather than putting a word for “yet” at the end. In “antes de eu me levantar,” Portuguese uses an infinitive after the stated subject eu, where English uses a past-tense clause: “before I got up.” The examples suit both everyday conversation and more formal situations.
