Sharing preferences and opinions in Portuguese

Use “preferir” to choose between options (“Prefiro” means “I prefer”) and “achar” to give an opinion (“Acho esse livro bom” means “I think this book is good”); “porque” introduces a reason. Unlike English, Portuguese often omits subject pronouns when context makes the subject clear; “você” is a common everyday form of address, while “o senhor” respectfully addresses a man and “a senhora” a woman, and all three take third-person verbs. “Prefiro,” “acho,” “concordo,” and “estou” are neutral; “tô” is a casual form of “estou,” “concordo com você” means “I agree with you,” “desculpe, mas não concordo” softens disagreement, and “estou em dúvida” expresses uncertainty. After “talvez,” Portuguese uses the subjunctive (“seja” from “ser,” “possa” from “poder”), unlike English; “a gente” means “we” and takes a singular verb, and can be used in a polite exchange without being specifically formal.
