Movement verbs in Brazilian Portuguese

Learn everyday movement verbs in the present: Portuguese has more subject-dependent verb forms than English. Eu takes venho or trago, while você, ele, ela and the everyday expression a gente use vem or traz. English “return” has two meanings here: voltar means go back, while devolver means give something back; ficar means remain somewhere, and virar means change direction. Use você in everyday conversation and o senhor to address a man respectfully; sentences about other people do not automatically sound formal, and a gente and the contractions pra and pro are common in speech. Questions can keep statement word order without adding an equivalent of “do,” and place expressions vary: até a escola means to the school, no parque means in the park, and de trem means by train.
