Perception and thinking verbs in Brazilian Portuguese
Portuguese changes the verb with the subject: “Eu vejo um professor” uses vejo, while você, ele, ela, and o senhor use third-person singular forms. Use você in ordinary conversation and o senhor or a senhora for respectful address; informal a gente means “we” but also takes a singular verb. English “know” splits into conhecer for familiarity with people or places and saber for information, so “Eu conheço você” and “Eu sei o nome do senhor” use different verbs. Present-tense questions need no equivalent of English “do,” and Portuguese can leave out a subject pronoun when the context makes it clear.
