Numbers in Portuguese

This lesson takes you from zero to a thousand in Brazilian Portuguese and shows you how to count things. Bigger numbers are built much like in English, with one difference you'll hear everywhere: the word e ("and") goes between every part, so 21 is vinte e um. Watch out for one, two and the hundreds, which change depending on whether the thing you're counting is masculine or feminine.

Zero to twenty — 16 to 19 are dezesseis, dezessete, dezoito, dezenove

Putting a number together: e between every part

Portuguese says the biggest part first, like English, but puts e ("and") between every part: 73 is setenta e três, 451 is quatrocentos e cinquenta e um. On its own or before a noun, 100 is cem (cem reais), but when e and another number follow, it becomes cento: cento e um, cento e vinte.

The other hundreds are single words you learn one by one — duzentos, trezentos, quinhentos — and a thousand is just mil, never "um mil". After mil, e only comes in when the rest is under a hundred or a round hundred: dois mil e vinte e seis, but dois mil trezentos e dez.

Brazil writes thousands with a dot and decimals with a comma, so 3.000 is três mil and 2,5 is two and a half.

Um or uma, dois or duas: numbers that agree with the noun

Unlike English, some Portuguese numbers change with the noun they count. One is um before a masculine noun and uma before a feminine one: um banheiro, uma pergunta. Two works the same way, dois irmãos but duas irmãs, and so do the hundreds from 200 up: duzentos reais, duzentas pessoas.

That's why a book has quatrocentas e cinquenta e uma páginas: página is feminine, so both the hundreds and the one change. Every other number stays the same, including cem and mil: três irmãos, três irmãs, mil pessoas.
