Colors and Shapes in Portuguese

This lesson gives you the basic colors and shapes in Brazilian Portuguese and shows you how to describe things with them. The big change from English is that a color usually comes after the noun and changes to match it: a red car is um carro vermelho, but a red ball is uma bola vermelha. A few colors never change at all, and you'll see which ones in the table.

Cor and eleven colors: vermelho, azul, amarelo, verde…

Asking about a color: De que cor é?

De quecoréo seu carro?—Éazul.

The color comes after the noun: um carro branco

Eu tenhoum carrobranco.

Vermelho, vermelha, vermelhos, vermelhas: colors that match the noun

In English a color never changes: a red ball, red shoes. In Portuguese it matches the noun it describes, so vermelho becomes vermelha with a feminine noun and takes an -s in the plural: a bola é vermelha, sapatos pretos, as paredes são brancas.

Verde, azul and marrom have no feminine form and only change in the plural, with azul turning into azuis: olhos azuis, sapatos marrons. Laranja, rosa and cinza never change at all, because they are also the words for an orange, a rose and ash: as folhas ficam laranja, um bolo rosa, nosso gato é cinza.
