Family members in Portuguese

Family members in Portuguese

This lesson gives you the Portuguese words for your family, from mãe and pai to primo, and the sentences to introduce them and ask about someone else's. Many family words come in pairs that differ only at the end, a masculine one in -o and a feminine one in -a: filho and filha, tio and tia, primo and prima. Lines marked informal use você, for friends and people your age; lines marked formal use o senhor or a senhora, the respectful "you" for someone older, like a neighbour you've just met: "A senhora tem filhos?" Portuguese gives your age with ter, "to have", so "Tem doze anos" is literally "has twelve years".

Close family: mãe, pai, irmão, irmã…

Grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins

Introducing someone: esse é o meu…, essa é a minha…

Essa é a minha irmã, a Ana.

Saying how many: Tenho dois irmãos

Tenho dois irmãos.

Asking about someone's family: você or a senhora?

Você tem filhos?

Irmãos, pais, filhos: one plural for the whole group

In Portuguese the masculine plural also covers a mixed group, so irmãos means "brothers" but also "brothers and sisters", pais means "parents" and filhos means "children". "Eu tenho dois irmãos" can be two brothers, or one brother and one sister, and the same goes for tios, avós and primos.

"My" matches the family member, not the speaker: meu for a man, minha for a woman, so everyone says "minha mãe" and "meu avô". In Brazil the o or a in front is optional, and the same goes for seu and sua, "your": "minha avó", "a minha filha", "Você mora com os seus pais?" Portuguese has no 's, so "my mother's sister" becomes "the sister of my mother": "Minha tia é irmã da minha mãe", where da is de + a.

In conversation, "we" is often a gente, with the same verb form as ele: "A gente é uma família grande."

Masculine, feminine and plural: avô and avó sound different (closed ô, open ó)
