Giving advice and weighing alternatives in Brazilian Portuguese

Learn to weigh options against someone's circumstances: considerar introduces an option, indicar and recomendar suggest it, and benefício and desvantagem name its advantages and drawbacks. After considerar, use an infinitive for an action, as in “considerou fazer”, rather than copying English's -ing form; eu indicaria and eu recomendaria both mean “I'd recommend”. Use a senhora for respectful address to a woman and você for the informal conversations shown here, both with third-person verb forms; the conditional makes a suggestion gentler in either register. To express reservations, servir means “suit” or “work for” someone in “Isso talvez me sirva”: talvez and embora take the subjunctive in these examples, whereas “não me serviria” expresses hypothetical unsuitability.
