Asking for directions and using public transport in French

These phrases help you ask for and follow a short route, then choose a train and check journey details. English commands do not change form for the person you address; French does: “Tournez,” “Continuez” and “Prenez” address vous, used politely to one person or to several people; “Tourne” and “Va” address tu. “Pourriez-vous…?” and “Je voudrais…” use the conditional to soften requests. Questions with inversion, such as “Quel train dois-je prendre…?”, tend to sound more formal; questions such as “Je prends quel train…?” and “On arrive quand ?” are conversational. “Est-ce que” introduces a question without itself marking formal address. “On arrive” commonly means “we arrive” in speech; “Nous arrivons” is more formal in this context. French does not add English question auxiliaries do or does. “Pour aller à…” means “to get to…,” introducing the destination.
