Polite requests and messages in French

French messages change with your relationship to the reader, from a friend's quick request to a courteous workplace exchange. English “you” does not show the difference between tu, used for a familiar person, and vous, used for respectful singular or plural address. Use te and s'il te plaît with tu, and vous and s'il vous plaît with vous. Pouvoir means “can” or “be able to.” In “Pourriez-vous m'envoyer le formulaire ?”, pourriez is the conditional form and makes the request softer; English “would” has no separate equivalent here. Relancer means to follow up or remind someone about an earlier request: je te relance is familiar, while je me permets de vous relancer is a courteous choice for an unfamiliar or professional contact.

Choosing between a familiar instruction and a polite request

Pourriez-vous action à l'infinitif, s'il vous plaît ?

Asking what time something happens

Tu sais à quelle heure proposition ? / Dites-moi à quelle heure proposition, s'il vous plaît.

Requesting confirmation with si

Merci de me confirmer si proposition.

Giving a reason and stating a deadline

“Il me le faut aujourd'hui parce que je pars demain” means that you need it today: il is an impersonal subject, me identifies who needs it, and le refers to the form. The alternative j'ai besoin du formulaire uses avoir besoin de, so do not translate English “I need” word for word.

Parce que introduces the reason and donc introduces the result. Adding s'il vous plaît makes a request courteous, but a clear deadline still sounds firm. In an embedded information question, do not add est-ce que: “Tu sais à quelle heure ferme le bureau ?” is correct. French can put the noun subject le bureau after the verb here, unlike the usual word order in an English embedded question.

Use si to mean “whether” in “Merci de me confirmer si mon formulaire est bien arrivé.” Merci de followed by an infinitive makes a polite request, and bien here asks for confirmation that the form arrived successfully. Use Salut with friends and Bonjour with unfamiliar or professional contacts. Bien à vous and Bien cordialement are written sign-offs, not spoken goodbyes.

Following up with a friend or a professional contact

Je te relance au sujet de demande précédente. / Je me permets de vous relancer au sujet de demande précédente. / Je vous écris pour vous relancer au sujet de message précédent.
