Managing discussions and clearing up misunderstandings in French

Learn to take a speaking turn, bring a discussion back to its topic and repair a misunderstanding in French. English “you” does not show the distinction between respectful or more distant “vous” and familiar singular “tu”: use the formal examples with people you address as “vous,” and the informal ones with people you address as “tu.” “Puis-je” and “pourrions-nous” make requests more formal or tentative, while conversational questions can keep statement word order; “on” often means “we,” even in polite spoken exchanges, but takes a singular verb. Use “vouloir dire” for what someone means and “sous-entendre” for what they imply, remembering that a direct question about an implication can sound challenging, just as it can in English.
