Supporting a point of view in French

Start with je pense que and support your opinion with parce que; when you add a second reason, et que can carry on the meaning of “and because,” even though English usually leaves that link unstated. Give a concrete case with par exemple, answer an objection with cependant, and introduce your overall judgment with dans l’ensemble. Unlike English “although,” bien que requires the subjunctive: “Bien que je sois favorable” means “although I am in favour”; the example also uses ait after je comprends que to acknowledge the staff’s need for rest. These expressions suit a considered spoken discussion or a short written argument; le dimanche means “on Sundays,” and le personnel is grammatically singular, so the response uses pourrait even where English uses “they could.”
