Colors and Shapes in French

This lesson gives you the basic colors and shapes in French and shows you how to describe things with them. Unlike in English, a French color comes after the noun and changes to match it: a black car is une voiture noire, black shoes are des chaussures noires, and only orange and marron never change. When you talk about the color itself, French puts le in front of it: Ma couleur préférée, c'est le vert. The examples marked formal use vous, for a shop assistant or a stranger; the ones marked informal use tu, for friends and family.

Couleur and eleven colors: rouge, bleu, jaune, vert…

Asking about a color: C'est de quelle couleur ?

C'est de quelle couleur ? — C'est ….

The color comes after the noun: une voiture blanche

un / une … …

Noir, noire, noirs, noires: colors that match the noun

In English a color never changes, but in French it matches the noun: add -e for a feminine noun and -s for a plural one, as in une voiture noire, les yeux bleus, des chaussures noires. You often can't hear the difference, so watch the spelling: bleu and bleue sound the same.

Some colors change more than that: blanc becomes blanche (une voiture blanche) and violet becomes violette (ces fleurs sont violettes). Rouge, jaune and rose already end in -e, so they only take the -s, and gris already ends in -s, so its masculine plural stays gris. Orange and marron never change at all, because they are also the names of a fruit and a chestnut: mes chaussures sont marron, les feuilles deviennent orange.
