Negotiating terms and trade-offs in French

Learn to weigh competing priorities, exchange concessions and keep a provisional proposal separate from an accepted agreement. Arbitrage refers to weighing competing options, while the examples use compromis for the compromise involved and en contrepartie for what you request in return. Use nous and vous with unfamiliar professional contacts, and on and tu with familiar contacts; unlike English “we,” on takes a singular verb even when it means several people. Nous pourrions and pourriez-vous soften proposals and requests. The condition after si stays in the present here: “si vous validez la commande aujourd’hui,” just as English normally uses the present in “if you approve the order today.” Do not put the French future or conditional in these si clauses.

Words for competing priorities and negotiation status

Explain the compromise between speed and price

Le compromis, c’est que avantage recherché entraîne conséquence défavorable.

Set a nonnegotiable budget ceiling

Limite fixée est non négociable.

Make an offer conditional on approval today

Offre au conditionnel ou au présent, mais seulement si condition au présent.

Link advance payment to training in return

Engagement proposé ; en contrepartie, demande adressée à l’autre partie ?

Outline a provisional package of terms

L’accord provisoire prévoirait ensemble des conditions proposées.

Confirm agreement and identify unresolved details

“Nous acceptons le prix et la livraison lundi” accepts specific terms, while the conditional prévoirait in the provisional package describes what the proposed agreement would provide. “La durée de la formation reste en suspens” leaves the training length undecided; en suspens is a fixed expression and does not change to match durée. French says discuter de l’acompte, with de, where English says “discuss the deposit” without a preposition.

“Nous nous sommes mis d’accord sur dix mille” means “we have agreed on ten thousand”: keep the reflexive construction se mettre d’accord sur rather than translating “agree” word for word. Il reste à convenir de introduces what still needs agreement, so list the deposit and training length separately from the accepted price and delivery date. The formal “deux heures répondraient-elles à vos besoins ?” uses inversion and vos, while the familiar “deux heures, ça t’irait ?” asks whether that proposal would suit the person addressed with tu.

Formal dialogue: exchange offers using vous

Informal dialogue: negotiate using on and tu
