Despite, even if, and still in French

French offers different structures for an obstacle that exists and a condition you are imagining. Learn to connect nouns with malgré, clauses with même si, and unexpected results with quand même. Pay attention to verb tense and word order: an English sentence cannot always be translated word for word.

Three connectors: malgré, même si, and quand même

Despite a fact: malgré with a noun phrase

Malgré groupe nominal, résultat inattendu.

Expressing an activity through a noun phrase

Malgré groupe nominal, résultat inattendu.

Even if: même si with indicative verb forms

Même si condition à l’indicatif, conséquence inchangée.

Facts, possible conditions, and imagined situations

Malgré takes a noun phrase without an extra de, as in “Malgré la récente hausse, la demande est restée forte.”; do not copy the English despite + -ing structure directly, since the activity example instead names the price increase: “Malgré la hausse des tarifs, la plupart des clients semblent satisfaits du service.”

Même si takes the indicative, not the subjunctive, and a present-tense condition can refer to the future: “Même si le train est en retard, j’arriverai avant midi.”

For a more remote possibility, use the imperfect after même si and the conditional in the result clause: “Même si le prix augmentait encore, les clients continueraient-ils à en acheter ?”, keeping the conditional out of the si clause.

Malgré presents its obstacle as a fact, whereas même si can mean either even if or even though, so context determines whether the condition is imagined or accepted as true.

Quand même expresses nevertheless rather than the time-related meaning of still, and in the compound-tense examples it comes between the auxiliary and past participle: “Les clients se sont plaints du prix, mais ils ont quand même passé commande.”

The inversion in continueraient-ils makes the question formal and suits a professional discussion; the other examples use broadly neutral forms that also fit everyday conversation.

An unexpected result: placing quand même

obstacle, mais sujet auxiliaire quand même participe passé et complément.
