Give, take and use verbs in French

French changes verb endings with the subject. Remember that on takes a singular verb, even when it means we. English get has no single French equivalent: obtenir means obtain, acheter means buy, and recevoir means receive. Fabriquer means make or manufacture; faire is broader. When the recipient is a noun, it usually follows à. When it is lui, it comes before the verb: “On lui donne un cadeau.” Laisser takes a person and an infinitive. Use dépenser for money and passer for time. Use tu with someone you know well and vous for polite singular address or for any plural address. Questions use est-ce que or inversion, not English-style do. In the dialogue, le replaces the masculine noun stylo.
