Em inglês, say introduz o que alguém disse: “Maya said she was working from home that day.” Tell costuma indicar a quem a informação foi dada e vem com essa pessoa logo depois: “Sara told me she had already sent the email.”
I’m working from home today” vira “Maya said she was working from home that day.” Esse recuo não é obrigatório em todos os contextos, como mostra o exemplo com “Leo said he still lives near the station.”
Speaker said (that) reported statement.
I'm working from home today.
Maya said she was working from home that day.
I'll call you tomorrow after lunch.
On Tuesday, Ben said he would call me the next day after lunch.
I still live near the station.
Leo said he still lives near the station.
Com tell, indique a pessoa que recebeu a informação logo depois do verbo: “Sara told me she had already sent the email.”
Speaker told recipient (that) reported statement.
I've already sent the email to everyone.
Sara told me she had already sent the email to everyone.
Our teacher told us the class was cancelled.
Use ask + palavra interrogativa + sujeito + verbo, sem inverter a ordem: “Amir asked where I was staying that week.” Em inglês, a pergunta relatada fica com a ordem de uma afirmação; não mantenha a inversão de “Where are you staying?”. A palavra interrogativa já introduz a pergunta, então não use whether nessa estrutura.
Speaker asked question word subject verb phrase in statement word order.
Where are you staying this week, Elena?
Amir asked where I was staying that week.
Como relatar perguntas de sim ou não
Use ask + whether + sujeito + verbo: “Nora asked whether I could help her.”
Speaker asked whether subject verb phrase in statement word order.
Could you help me move the chairs?
Nora asked whether I could help her move the chairs.
A Nora perguntou se eu podia ajudar ela a mudar as cadeiras de lugar.
Have you finished the report yet?
Dan asked whether we had finished the report yet.
Como relatar pedidos
Para relatar um pedido, use ask + pessoa + (not) to + verbo: “Rita asked me to wait outside.” Para um pedido negativo, use not to: “The nurse asked us not to use our phones.”
Speaker asked person (not) to action.
Please wait outside for a moment.
Rita asked me to wait outside for a moment.
Please don't use your phones in the waiting room.
The nurse asked us not to use our phones in the waiting room.
Ao relatar uma fala, ajuste os pronomes ao ponto de vista de quem está contando: “I’ll call you tomorrow” pode virar “Ben said he would call me the next day.” Se o relato acontece depois, today pode virar that day e tomorrow pode virar the next day. O passado no verbo de relato costuma levar o verbo da fala um tempo para trás: “I’m working” vira “she was working”, e “I’ve sent” vira “she had sent”. Mas essa mudança não é automática: se a informação ainda é verdadeira, o presente pode continuar, como em “Leo said he still lives near the station.”
I'm working from home today.
Maya said she was working from home that day.
I'll call you tomorrow after lunch.
On Tuesday, Ben said he would call me the next day after lunch.
I still live near the station.
Leo said he still lives near the station.
I've already sent the email to everyone.
Sara told me she had already sent the email to everyone.
Where are you staying this week, Elena?
Amir asked where I was staying that week.
Nora asked whether I could help her move the chairs.
A Nora perguntou se eu podia ajudar ela a mudar as cadeiras de lugar.
Have you finished the report yet?
Dan asked whether we had finished the report yet.
Please don't use your phones in the waiting room.
The nurse asked us not to use our phones in the waiting room.
Ao relatar, use ask + pessoa + to: “Rita asked me to wait outside.”
Maya said she was working from home that day.
On Tuesday, Ben said he would call me the next day after lunch.
Could you help me move the chairs?
Please wait outside for a moment.
Rita asked me to wait outside for a moment.
The nurse asked us not to use our phones in the waiting room.
