only if necessary condition, outcome
We'll release the payment only if the work passes inspection.
You can borrow my car only if you bring it back tonight.
default outcome unless exception
The booking will remain valid unless we receive a cancellation.
We'll eat outside unless it rains.
precaution in case possible future situation
Please keep a copy in case the original is lost.
Take your keys in case I'm out when you get back.
「only if the work passes inspection」は「検査に合格した場合に限り」という必要条件で、日本語の「合格しないと支払えない」と違って条件部分を肯定形で述べ、合格だけで必ず支払うとまでは約束しません。条件を文頭に出す場合は主節の語順も変わり、「Only if the work passes inspection will we release the payment」のように助動詞を主語の前に置きます。
「Please keep a copy in case the original is lost」は紛失する可能性に備えて今コピーを保管する指示で、紛失してから行動する条件文ではありません。
「whether you pay online or at the desk」は「オンラインでも窓口でも」という意味で、選択肢を挙げて料金が変わらないことを示し、この用法の節でも未来の支払いに現在形を使えます。
We'll release the payment only if the work passes inspection.
Please keep a copy in case the original is lost.
outcome whether … or alternative one or alternative two
The fee is the same whether you pay online or at the desk.
I'm going whether you come with me or stay here.
