英語の冠詞（a・an・the）と複数形
英語の名詞の前につく a・an・the（冠詞）と、二つ以上のときの名詞の形（複数形）を学びます。日本語では「本」は一冊でも十冊でも「本」ですが、英語では a book、the books のように、一つか二つ以上か、どれのことかわかっているかを毎回はっきりさせます。なお、英語にはフランス語やポルトガル語のような名詞の男性・女性の区別はありません。

a・an と the：一つのときと二つ以上のとき
a・an と the の使い分け（an は母音の音の前）
初めて話に出てくる物や、どれでもいい一つの物には a をつけます：I have a book. 話し手にも聞き手にも「どれのことか」わかる物には the をつけるので、一度出た本は次から the book になります：The book is on the table. 日本語では「本」とだけ言えますが、英語では数えられる名詞が一つのとき、a か the（または my などの言葉）を必ずつけます。
a と an の使い分けはつづりではなく音で決まり、母音の音で始まる言葉の前では an になります：I'd like an apple, please. hour は h を読まないので an hour、university は「ユ」の音で始まるので a university です。名詞の前に形容詞があるときは、その形容詞の最初の音で決めます：We have a new car.

複数形の作り方（-s・-es・-ies と、形が変わる名詞）
二つ以上なら名詞に -s をつける
日本語の名詞は一つでも二つ以上でも形が変わりませんが、英語では数えられる名詞が二つ以上なら -s をつけます：The apples are on the table. 「四つ」「三冊」のような助数詞は使わず、数を名詞の前に置くだけですが、そのときも -s は省けません：We need four chairs. 二つ以上の物を初めて話に出すときは a をつけず、books のように名詞だけで言うか、some books のように some をつけます。
box → boxes のように s・x・ch・sh で終わる名詞には -es を、family → families のように「子音＋y」で終わる名詞は y を i にかえて -es をつけます。child → children、man → men、foot → feet のように形が大きく変わる名詞もあるので、一つずつ覚えましょう。the は一つでも二つ以上でも同じ形で、The tables are new. のように使います。
