英語で過去の出来事の順序を説明する
日本語では「もう食べていた」のように言いますが、英語では過去のある時点より前に済んだことを「had＋過去分詞」で表せます。「When I got up, my sister had already eaten.」では、姉が食べたのが先で、私が起きたのが後です。「まだ〜していなかった」は「hadn't＋過去分詞＋yet」で表し、その過去の時点では済んでいなかったという意味になります。「before」の後ろには主語と動詞を置けますが、日本語の「起きる前に」につられて現在形にせず、ここでは後の出来事も過去形にします。
順序と完了を表す「もう・まだ・前に」
そのときにはもう済んでいたこと
When a later past event, subject had already past participle.
When I got up, my sister had already eaten.
I had already washed the dishes when she got up.
そのときにはまだ済んでいなかったこと
At a past time, subject hadn't past participle yet.
At eight, I hadn't eaten yet.
When my mother got up, I hadn't washed the dishes yet.
別の出来事より前に済んでいたこと
Subject had past participle before a later past event.
I had washed the dishes before my mother got up.
My sister had eaten before I got up.
