If unreal past condition, imagined result with would have + past participle.
If I'd left earlier, I would have caught the train.
If we had checked the date, we would have arrived on time.
If unreal past condition, possible past result with might have + past participle or available opportunity with could have + past participle.
If she'd applied, she might have got the job.
If we had asked, we could have changed the date.
If unreal past choice, imagined present situation with would + base verb.
If I'd taken that job, I'd be living in Paris now.
If I had kept studying French, I would be able to speak to our clients now.
「I wish I'd applied for that job.」 この例の I'd は I had の短縮形ですが、結果を想像する I'd be では I would の短縮形です。
この課の letting that chance go や changing the date は、後悔の対象となる行動です。
I wish I'd applied for that job.
I'd probably be working abroad. I regret letting that chance go.
Looking back, I regret changing the date without checking with you.
Now I wish I had spoken to you first.
「You should have told me before you changed the date.」
You should have told me before you changed the date.
You shouldn't have changed the date without asking me.
