英語の時間の言い方

英語で時刻をたずね、答える言い方を学びます。日本語の「三時」と「三時間」が違うように、英語でも three o'clock は「三時」、three hours は「三時間」と、時刻と長さを別の言葉で言います。英語には「〜分過ぎ」を past、「〜分前」を to で言う言い方と、7:30 を seven thirty と数字どおりに読む言い方があり、どちらもよく使われます。敬語のような言葉の形の違いはなく、知らない人には Excuse me をつけるなど、言い方を足してていねいにします。

「〜分過ぎ」の past と「〜分前」の to

英語では、30分までは「何分過ぎ」を past で、30分を過ぎると次の時までの「何分前」を to で言います。6:10 は ten past six、4:40 は twenty to five で、日本語とは逆に分が先、時があとに来ます。15分は a quarter（4分の1時間）と言い、a quarter past two は 2:15、a quarter to nine は 8:45 です。30分は half past で、half past seven が「七時半」にあたります。

o'clock はちょうどの時刻にだけ使い、It's three o'clock. とは言えても、ten past three o'clock とは言いません。日本語の「五時二十分前」はあまり使わない言い方ですが、英語の to はふだんの会話でごく普通に使われます。

時刻に「朝」「午後」「夜」をつける言い方

日本語では「朝七時」「午後二時」のように時間帯を時刻の前に置きますが、英語では at seven in the morning のように後ろに置きます。午後は in the afternoon、夕方から寝るまでは in the evening、夜遅くは at night で、night だけ前置詞が at になります。「今日の午後」は this afternoon、「今晩」は this evening で、this がつくと in は使いません。

書くときや短く言うときは、午前を a.m.、午後を p.m. として 7 a.m.、2 p.m. のように数字の後ろにつけます。日本語の「午前」「午後」と違って前には置かず、o'clock といっしょにも使いません。時刻の前の「〜に」は at で、I get up at seven in the morning.（朝七時に起きます）となります。

時刻表やスケジュールの時刻（seven thirty）

電車の時刻やお店の営業時間では、時と分の数字をそのまま読み、7:30 なら seven thirty と言います。分が 1〜9 のときは 0 を oh と読み、3:05 は three oh five です。日本の駅のような24時間制は英語圏ではふだんあまり使われず、19:30 も seven thirty と読んで、必要なら p.m. や in the evening をつけます。昼の12時は noon、夜中の12時は midnight と言うと、昼か夜かを取り違えることがありません。
