What evidence do you have for a claim? / Evidence support an explanation, but its coverage is limited.
What evidence do you have for the claim that the new lights reduced energy use?
The bills support that explanation, but they cover only two months.
What's your basis for that claim about the new lights?
Well, the bills support it, but we've only got two months to compare.
「Your assumption is that the building was used just as much in both months.」
「You're making an assumption about how much the building was used.」では、「about」の後ろの「how much the building was used」が建物の利用の程度を表し、疑問文の語順にはしません。 「Your assumption is that」は前提を明示して検討する場面に向き、「You're making an assumption」は日常会話でも使えますが、相手の考えを直接指摘する響きがあります。
Your assumption is that the building was used just as much in both months.
You're making an assumption about how much the building was used.
「There is an association, but we have not established that the new lights caused the drop.」
There is an association, but we have not established that the new lights caused the drop.
The new lights might be one cause of the drop, but we cannot yet say how much they contributed.
Those figures show an association; they don't establish that one change led to the other.
Those lights might be one cause of the drop, but we don't know how much they helped.
A factor might be one cause of an outcome, but the extent of its contribution remains unknown.
The new lights might be one cause of the drop, but we cannot yet say how much they contributed.
Those lights might be one cause of the drop, but we don't know how much they helped.
maybe a competing explanation is a more plausible explanation / Could a competing explanation be a more plausible explanation?
Could warmer weather be a more plausible explanation?
Maybe warmer weather is a more plausible explanation.
