英語で本を比べて選ぶ・大きさと値段の伝え方
三冊の本を、大きさや値段などの具体的な点から比べてみましょう。日本語では「より」「ほうが」を使いますが、英語では形容詞の形を変えたり、その前に語を足したりします。比べた結果を伝え、欲しい本を選ぶ会話まで練習します。
本が役に立つと伝える言葉
「useful」は「役に立つ」という意味で、物が便利だったり、何かの助けになったりするときに使います。本文の「The red book is useful.」は「赤い本は役に立つ。」という意味です。日本語の「役に立つ」は動詞を使った表現ですが、英語の useful は形容詞なので、この文では主語の後に動詞の is を置きます。

「よりよい」と「一番よい」の違い
日本語の「いい・よりいい・一番いい」に当たる英語は、good・better・best と形が変わるので、ひと組で覚えましょう。「The red book is better than the blue book.」は「赤い本は青い本よりいい」という意味で、二冊を比べています。日本語では比べる相手に「より」を付けて先に置きますが、英語では better の後に than を置き、その後に相手を続けます。
「The red book is the best.」は、話題になっている本の中で「赤い本が一番いい」という意味です。この文では best の前の the も忘れずに付けましょう。大きさや値段など、何を重視するかを考えてから「よりよい」「一番よい」を使うと、選ぶ理由が伝わります。

本を比べて選ぶ表現のまとめ
「This book is bigger than that book.（この本はあの本より大きい。）」のように、英語では「主語＋動詞＋比較級＋than＋比べる相手」の順に並べるので、日本語とは比べる相手を置く位置が変わります。大きさを比べるときは big の最後の g を重ねて bigger にし、値段を比べるときは cheap の語尾に er を付けて cheaper にします。
「役に立つ」という意味の useful は語尾を変えず、前に more を置き、「The red book is more useful than the green book.（赤い本は緑の本より役に立つ。）」のように比較します。すでに比較級の形になっている bigger や cheaper の前には、さらに more を付けません。
「よりよい」は better、「一番よい」は the best で表し、二つを比べるのか、話題になっている物の中で一番なのかを区別します。
