“If I had a car” は実際には車がないという意味で、“I could drive you” は、もしあればできることを、“I would drive you” は、もしあればすることを言います。
By the time we arrived at the station, the train had left.
If I had a car, I could drive you to the station.
別の過去を想像する文(“If we had caught…”、“We could have…”)と、選択を評価する文(“We should have left earlier”)です。would have、could have、should have “we wouldn't have missed it” の it は、八時の電車のことです。
- A
Marta was really upset. We arrived after the ceremony.
- B
I know. We should have left earlier.
- A
If we had caught the eight o'clock train, we would have arrived on time.
- B
And if we hadn't stopped for coffee, we wouldn't have missed it.
- A
We could have called a taxi from the station.
- B
You're right. And I should have called Marta.
“if we would have left” とは言いません。過去分詞は left(leave)、caught(catch、電車に間に合って乗る)、told(tell)、waited(wait)などです。
If subject + had + participle, subject would have participle.
If we had left at seven, we would have caught the train.
If you had told me about the delay, I would have waited for you.
If Ben had checked the times, we wouldn't have missed the train.
If Ana hadn't lost her phone, she would have called Marta.
これは “I could drive you” の could が過去に向いた形です。could have は if なしでも使えます。 could have のあとも、would have と同じく stayed, seen, called のような過去分詞が続きます。
If subject + had + participle, subject could have participle.
If we had booked a hotel, we would have stayed the night.
If we had booked a hotel, we could have stayed the night.
If we had caught that train, we could have seen the ceremony.
これは助言の should(“You should rest today”)が過去に向いた形です。日本語の「〜べきだった」「〜すればよかった」にあたり、“You should have told me about the delay” がその例です。 “I shouldn't have stopped for coffee” は、寄ったけれど、それは間違いだったという意味です。
subject should have participle.
You should have told me about the delay.
I shouldn't have stopped for coffee.
We should have booked a hotel. If we had, we could have stayed the night.
d には二つの働きがあり、過去分詞の前では had(“we'd left”)、have の前では would(“we'd have caught”)です。“If I'd had my phone” では、'd が助動詞の had で、続く had は have の過去分詞です。would've, could've, should've の語尾は弱く発音され、of のように聞こえますが、書くときは have のままで、“would of” は誤りです。文を聞いて、一つ目を前に聞いた “If we had left at seven” と比べてみましょう。
If we'd left at seven, we'd have caught the train.
If I'd had my phone, I could've called Marta.
I should've checked the times.
“we would be in bed now” がその例です。
If we had booked a hotel, we would be in bed now.
If we had caught that train, Marta wouldn't be so upset now.
(If he had…, he would have…)、すべきだったこと(should have)です。
He could have an option he had. If he had that change, he would have the result. Leo should have the right choice.
He could have driven to the ceremony.
If he had driven, he would have arrived on time.
Leo should have told Marta about the delay.
|---|---|
| Change one past fact | If we had left at seven, … |
| The sure result | …, we would have caught the train. |
| A possibility you had | …, we could have seen the ceremony. |
| The right choice | We should have left earlier. |
