“The message said that lunch was at one” は、一度言われたことを伝える文です。“According to the paper” は「新聞によると」にあたり、情報の出どころを示しますが、自分が信じているかどうかは示しません。“Whereas” は二つの事実を並べ、“may” と “we haven't confirmed that” は確かでないことをそのまま残します。
The message said that lunch was at one.
According to the paper, the station is closed.
Most shops gained customers, whereas some older residents stayed at home.
Anna may be away, but we haven't confirmed that.
The town closed the main street to cars for four Saturdays last summer.
Of the 40 shops on the street, 31 had more customers during the trial.
Some older residents stayed at home because the shops were too far from the bus stop.
The town may repeat the trial next summer.
The trial was a huge success: every shop on the main street had more customers.
Customers love a street without cars.
Every shop owner we talked to wants the street closed every Saturday.
“The notice says…” “The paper reports that 31 of the 40 shops had more customers” の had が過去形なのは、実施がすでに終わっているからです。
the source reports / the source claims / the figure suggests that what it says.
The paper reports that 31 of the 40 shops had more customers.
The association claims that every shop had more customers.
That figure suggests that the trial helped most shops, but it doesn't show that they sold more.
“Both sources agree that…”
Both the sources agree / say that the shared point.
Both sources agree that shops had more customers during the trial.
Both the paper and the association say that shops had more customers.
The paper reports that 31 of the 40 shops had more customers, whereas the association claims that every shop did.
The two sources disagree about how many shops had more customers.
The paper mentions the older residents, whereas the association doesn't.
“no evidence” や “some evidence” と言い、an evidence や evidences とは言いません。
The association gives no evidence for that claim.
The paper gives a figure, but it doesn't say who counted the customers.
The association only mentions talking to shop owners.
The association uses strong words like "huge success".
The text doesn't mention the older residents who stayed at home.
The text seems biased: it only gives the shop owners' side.
“must have wanted to hide” と “might not have known” は、だれかが何を望み、何を知っていたかについての推測です。 “The text doesn't tell us why.”
The association must have wanted to hide the problem.
The writer might not have known about the older residents.
The text doesn't tell us why.
動詞は同じですが、文は短くなります(every shop did、31 of the 40 did)。 “It seems to be” は偏りを慎重に認め、“we don't know why” は意図を推測しません。
- A
Have you read both texts?
- B
Yes. They both say that shops had more customers.
- A
But the association claims that every shop did.
- B
I know, but the paper reports that 31 of the 40 did.
- A
So is the association biased?
- B
It seems to be. It only gives one side, but we don't know why.
may repeat は may のままで、will repeat にはしません。
The paper reports that the town may repeat the trial.
The association claims that customers prefer the street without cars.
Last month, about 200 people came to the library each Sunday.
Sunday mornings are busy, but the library is empty after two o'clock.
Both sources agree that the shared point. first source and verb that what it says, whereas second source and verb that what it says. That suggests that a careful conclusion, but we don't know what is missing.
Both sources agree that people use the library on Sundays.
The report says that about 200 people came each Sunday, whereas the staff claim that the library is empty after two o'clock.
That suggests that most people come in the morning, but we don't know why.
