“He must be here because his bag is on his desk.” deduz algo a partir de uma pista: ele deve estar aqui. “He might be at lunch.” diz que isso é só uma possibilidade. “In my view, the small hotel is better because it's cheaper.” dá uma opinião e o motivo. “I see what you mean, but it's too expensive.” discorda com educação. “According to the notice, the library will be closed next week.” diz de onde veio a informação: segundo o aviso. E “What do you mean by ‘cheap’?” pede que a pessoa explique uma palavra.
He must be here because his bag is on his desk.
He might be at lunch.
In my view, the small hotel is better because it's cheaper.
I see what you mean, but it's too expensive.
According to the notice, the library will be closed next week.
What do you mean by “cheap”?
Palavras novas
Each other é um ao outro: “We can't hear each other.” é a gente não consegue se ouvir. Off, para um aparelho, é desligado. Next to the street é ao lado da rua. “Thick curtains could help.” diz que as cortinas talvez ajudem; “we could buy new windows” sugere outra saída.
- A
This meeting room is too noisy. We can't hear each other.
Esta sala de reunião está barulhenta demais. A gente não consegue se ouvir.
- B
It might be the air conditioner.
- A
It can't be the air conditioner because it's off.
- B
Then it must be the traffic. The windows are next to the street.
- A
You're right. How can we improve this room?
- B
Thick curtains could help. Or we could buy new windows.
Cortinas grossas poderiam ajudar.
Too antes do adjetivo mostra que passou do limite: too noisy é barulhenta demais. So liga o fato ao efeito, e there, lá, retoma o lugar: “The meeting room is too noisy, so we can't work there.”
The meeting room / The office / The kitchen is too noisy / dark / cold, so we can't work / read / eat there.
The meeting room is too noisy, so we can't work there.
The office is too dark, so we can't read there.
The kitchen is too cold, so we can't eat there.
Procurar a causa
Because traz a pista: “It must be the traffic because the noise stops at night.”, “It can't be the air conditioner because it's off.”
It must / might / can't be the traffic / the air conditioner.
It must be the traffic because the noise stops at night.
It might be the air conditioner.
It can't be the air conditioner because it's off.
Two thousand é dois mil, e three hundred é trezentos. Turn on the lights é acender as luzes.
- A
According to the company, new windows cost two thousand euros.
- B
In my view, that's too much. Curtains would be much cheaper.
Na minha opinião, é demais. Cortinas sairiam bem mais baratas.
- A
I see what you mean, but curtains might not be enough.
- B
That's true. However, they'd cost only three hundred euros.
- A
Although they're cheaper, the room might be too dark.
- B
That's true, but we can turn on the lights.
- A
OK. Let's try the curtains first.
- B
I agree. Let me write the recommendation.
Comparar com would e than
Nada foi comprado ainda, por isso would imagina cada opção: “Curtains would be cheaper than new windows.” Cheaper leva -er, expensive pede more, e better é o comparativo de good. Than é que, do que. Much reforça o comparativo: “With new windows, the room would be much quieter.” é bem mais silenciosa. Em they'd cost, esse 'd é would.
Curtains / Thick curtains would be cheaper / better / more expensive than new windows / a bigger window.
Curtains would be cheaper than new windows.
New windows would be better than curtains.
With new windows, the room would be much quieter.
In my view abre a opinião, e because traz a razão: “In my view, curtains are the better choice because they're cheaper.” Para sugerir o que fazer, use should: “We should buy thick curtains.”
In my view, curtains / new windows are the better choice because they're cheaper / the room would be much quieter.
Which is the better choice?
In my view, curtains are the better choice because they're cheaper.
In my view, new windows are the better choice because the room would be much quieter.
They're much cheaper. For example, they cost only three hundred euros.
São bem mais baratas. Por exemplo, custam só trezentos euros.
We should buy thick curtains.
O que a fonte diz e o que você pensa
Separe informação de opinião. According to mostra que a informação vem de outra fonte: “According to the company, new windows cost two thousand euros.” In my view mostra que a opinião é sua: “In my view, that's too much.” Para a sua opinião, não use according to. Repita os números como a fonte deu e mantenha a dúvida dela: “could be ready in two weeks” é poderiam ficar prontas, não vão ficar.
According to the company, new windows cost two thousand euros.
In my view, that's too much. Curtains would be much cheaper.
Na minha opinião, é demais. Cortinas sairiam bem mais baratas.
According to the company, the new windows could be ready in two weeks.
Segundo a empresa, as janelas novas poderiam ficar prontas em duas semanas.
Do you mean two thousand euros for all the windows?
I see what you mean, but curtains might not be enough.” Although também serve: “Although they're cheaper, the room might be too dark.” That's true é é verdade.
I see what you mean, but / That's true, but curtains might not be enough / we can turn on the lights.
I see what you mean, but curtains might not be enough.
Although they're cheaper, the room might be too dark.
That's true, but we can turn on the lights.
That's true. However, they'd cost only three hundred euros.
What do you mean by…? pede a explicação. Quem explica usa palavras simples: “It means windows with two layers of glass.” Layers são camadas.
Double glazing reduces noise from the street.
What do you mean by “double glazing”?
It means windows with two layers of glass.
The noise level in this room is seventy decibels.
Por fim, a objeção respondida e o próximo passo, com If e o presente: “If the room is still too noisy, we can call the company again.” Still é ainda. Recommend vem direto com o que se recomenda: “We recommend the curtains”. We mostra que a decisão é do grupo.
Our recommendation: thick curtains.
The meeting room is too noisy, so we can't work there.
We compared thick curtains and new windows.
According to the company, new windows cost two thousand euros.
We recommend the curtains because they're much cheaper.
Although they might not be enough, we can try them first.
Embora talvez não sejam suficientes, podemos experimentá-las primeiro.
If the room is still too noisy, we can call the company again.
Lamp é lâmpada ou luminária, bigger window é janela maior, e very old é muito velha.
The office is too dark, so we can't read there.
How can we improve this office?
It must be the lamp because it's very old.
A new lamp would be cheaper than a bigger window.
In my view, a new lamp is the better choice because it's cheaper.
I see what you mean, but one lamp might not be enough.
That's true, but we can buy two.
We recommend two new lamps.
